Self-Care Tips for Busy Mommies

We all have those people in our lives who take those long evening strolls with their partners, read tons of books in a month, workout and have breakfast before going to work, and constantly tell you how meditation is good for mental health. Well, the catch here is that they usually don't have children!

But, does that mean that all this is not important or required for us too? it ABSOLUTELY is required!

The big questions here is - When on earth should I do all this? Where is the time?

Between prepping meals, kid's school and extra classes, chores, when do I find the energy to go for a run or workout at home? I know I need to be able to do all this. However, there is a difference between knowing and doing. I started giving myself my time a few months ago when I had had enough. I was burnt out looking out for everything and everyone. It has helped me immensely and I promise, you too will feel great. So, let's get cracking and incorporate these important self-care tips into our daily routine.

My Top 15 Self Care Tips for Busy Mommies

These are my easy to do tips that you can definitely incorporate in your daily routine. Some are small, some are big, but all of them are surely DOABLE.

Take time to dream about yourself.

Don't laugh this one out, mommies! take time and settle down with the idea that you are amazing. It is a fact that when we tell ourselves that we are amazing, it boosts our self-confidence. Sit down with your cuppa-tea and be happy about yourself. Just like she said, "Mein apni favourite hoon" !!

Meditate

This is not a cliché, mommies. Meditation is an impactful tool to help us regulate our emotional wellbeing and overall mental health. This will also help you to be more present and attentive with your kids. The bonus here is that if you teach this skill early in their lives, it will have major benefits for them later in life! It could be as simple as just sitting comfortably and watching our breath.

Unplug

Let's face it - we are way too attached to our devices. Make a charging station at your home so that they aren't charging beside you all the time. All devices can be put at one place, preferably at the center of the house and that's when you should sit back and engage yourself with something else that needs your attention - YOU! Don't miss out on life, leave the device behind for a bit.

Stretch

Another way to reflect and unwind through a busy day. It helps you to get ready, get charged for what's coming up in the day. Just while sitting on your couch, just leave everything and stretch those arms and legs long and tight - breath long and deep as you do so. You'll be amazed at how good that feels. Let out a yelp if you need to. Need more proof? Here are 7 incredible benefits of stretching. C'mon, do it right now. SSTTRREETTCCHHHHH !!! Felt good?

Just be still

It only takes a minute. Look around and notice your surroundings. Take a breath — and there you go. Yes, we're sneaking meditation practice into your busy day again...you won't regret it.

Laugh often

It's true! See how Laughter is the best medicine!

Call a friend you haven't talked to in awhile

Self-care is about connection with yourself, but don't forget that connecting with others is good for your soul too!

Write in your journal

Writing helps us become mindful. It is essential that we put down our feelings in order to regulate them. This avoids unnecessary conflicts because you don't vent out in front of the wrong person when you're upset about something. But, journaling isn't just for venting. It is also for recording the good times - like something sweet your little one said that you don't want to forget. There are several such benefits of journaling. I personally love getting a really cute journal and start it every year. Get options here.

Make a connection with someone you don't know

Connections open up a world of possibilities. What better gift can you give yourself than the opportunity for something great? Maybe it's a career shift, maybe a new mom friend. So take a leap and put yourself first by stepping outside of your comfort zone and making a new connection.

Read

Reading has been linked to de-stressing. It helps to just get away for sometime. It need not be a bulky book every time. If you aren't too keen on reading books, you can grab your favourite blog (wink wink), or magazine, article, anything! But read a bit everyday. It'll help you to not just calm down, but also remain abreast with your choice of field. That in turn will help you to build connections. Bonus - your kids will look at you and read too!! It is a win-win for all!

Listen to your favorite song (or album)

According to Neuropsychologist Daniel Levitin's research, music can positively alter brain chemistry, and boost chemicals in our brain that support things like immunity. Plus, how do you not get happy when you hear your favorite song? Here is a playlist that'll make you happy. Check it out!

Paint or Colour

I cannot stress enough on the healing and calming effects of painting or even colouring. It centers me every time I feel overwhelmed. Moreover, it's a great way to get engaged with your little one. Still not onboard? Find out why colouring is so great for your mental health.

Drink Water

There is enough and more information about why water is important for you. Then what are you waiting for?? Grab your water now.  A great way to establish you daily water goal is to set up reminders on your smart speakers. If you haven't got that option right now then the easier way is to stick a post-it at such a place in the house where you are mostly to be the whole day. Keep a personal bottle to get rid of that water procrastination. With the bottle in front of you, you will definitely drink it up.

Take a long shower or bath

More time for yourself is good for all of the reasons above. Put the kids to bed and take a minute (or twenty) to relax, reflect, and rejuvenate for the day ahead. Solitude can change your brain in amazing ways. If your day does not allow for this personal time then the night is your best friend. For the longest time, I used to take a real shower at night when my little one was fast asleep and no one else in the house needed me. Mornings were just 5 minutes in-and-out kind of shower. At night I could really let the hot water calm my tired body and I could throw in a beauty ritual here and there like a face pack. Plus, you get a real good sleep afterwards.

Revel in the absolute joy of being a parent

Kiss your babies, smell their heads, dance with them to crazy music...because it's the most amazing, important, impactful thing you will ever do, and you are awesome at it!

What I'm trying to say here - whether you're new to mother-land or a pro citizen, make time for yourself. You are the most important link. You need to be happy and strong not just for your family's sake, but also for your own happiness and longevity. There's so much love all around you, you just need to focus on it. Start with just one thing from the list and work your way up. Practice these self-care tips and make yourself a priority today and everyday.

Love and Hugs to all the Mommies 💖
